Rules & Guidelines
Rules & Guidelines
SET Scramble is a scramble format in which all members on a team SWING simultaneously and then play the best ball. IMPORTANT: Players are not required to “impact” the ball at the same time.

How many players swing at the same time?
Two members of the same team will start their swings together at the same time off the tee box standing at our recommended 4 paces apart. This format is played with 6 people per group (three 2-players teams), so the next team will do the same, and so forth.

Each team will then choose their best tee shot and play from there. The best shot or object ball can be picked up, cleaned, and placed back to its original position. Team members can now choose to place their ball 4 paces left or right of the object ball (players must always stay 4 paces away from their hitting partner from the tee up to the green). Both team members must now hit at the same time.

Once the team has reached the green, team members will putt at the same time and will stand two paces from their partner. The team member that places ball two paces away (left or right) from his partner but may not place the ball any closer to the hole than the object ball.

Summary
Tee Box — Two players from the same team hit at the same time standing four paces apart.
Between tee and green — Two players from the same team hit at the same time standing four paces apart.
Green — Two players from the same team hit at the same time and standing two paces apart.

Tee Boxes
All teams must hit from the same tee location. The tournament director can decide which set of tees the field will use. See Coed Teams for ladies tee box selection.

Scoring
Bogey is the maximum score allowed. After players from a team have missed their attempt for a score of par, the team will receive the maximum score of 1-over par for that hole. There is no need to hole out the bogey putt, the ball can be picked up and score is a bogey.

Hitting Window
SET is an acronym for Same Exact Time, which means teammates Swing at the same time but do not have to impact the ball at the same time  Players can hit at different times but once any of the team members’ balls comes to rest, other team members cannot start a swing. If they do, that ball does not count. In other words, all team members must have started their swing before the first ball has come to rest, otherwise, this is considered a balk and the shot does not count. The goal of the hitting window is to speed up play and add an element of team strategy new to golf.

Switching Cuts
Players can switch cuts of grass like moving a ball from rough to fairway or fairway to rough but cannot switch from rough or fringe to green.

Sand Traps and Hazards
Only one player is allowed to hit a ball out of a hazard altogether. This does not mean one at a time. This means if a team chooses to play a ball out of any hazard including sand traps, only one player from that team can play that ball.  In a sand trap the ball can be lifted, cleaned anywhere in the sand as long as it is no closer to the hole. If a ball comes to rest next to a hazard and a player takes his four paces and finds that his drop would be into the hazard then the player would start counting his four paces from the other side of the hazard.

Example: Player A hits his drive just to the left of a sand trap and the team uses his ball. Player B walks up and notices that there is OB to the left side of the sand trap and he could only drop his ball to the right side of the object ball. This player can go to the other side (right side) of the sand trap and start counting his four paces.

Very Short Putts
Teams will have the option to have only one player tap in the short putts (instead of the standard two players). This helps save time and simplifies the format.

Colliding Golf Balls
If two balls collide and knock each other off course (or bounce off each other into the hole), it is considered to be “rub of the green”. Colliding golf balls can help you or hurt you.

Safety Rules
When hitting at the same time, players must always stay four normal sized paces (approximately 4 yards) apart without being closer to the hole. This does not need to be an exact measurement and is more of a guideline. If a tree is between a players’ ball and the green/line of flight and is within 10 paces of the ball, only one player (instead of the standard two players) may play that shot.  Keeping at least one ball in play is very important.

Coed Teams
A Coed team can consist of one woman and one man. However, a coed team must use the men’s tee box.

Counting Strategy
Teams can use any counting strategy they like. Some teams might use a “1, 2, Ready...Swing” method while other may say “Ready and Swing”.  Some teams count down to one or say “SET” and do a “silent count”.  There is not a right and wrong way to get your team to swing at the same time.

Tie Breaker
Ties will be broken by scorecards (back nine “total” score, front nine hardest hole, etc.)
